Solar Installer Sydney: What to Check Before You Choose One

Choosing a solar installer in Sydney? Here’s what to actually check — accreditation, standards compliance, and quotes — before you sign anything.

Solar Installer Sydney: What to Check Before You Choose One

Sydney has no shortage of solar installers. Search “solar installer Sydney” and you’ll get pages of results — big national brands, local family businesses, and comparison sites that all claim to be the best option. Sorting through that is genuinely hard, and it’s made harder by an industry where a small number of operators still run misleading sales tactics, especially door-to-door.

Here’s a practical rundown of what actually matters when you’re choosing who installs your system, from a Sydney-based installer’s perspective.

Check accreditation first, not last

Any installer working on a grid-connected solar or battery system in Australia should be accredited through the Clean Energy Council (CEC). This isn’t optional paperwork — it’s what makes your system eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which is the main financial incentive that brings the upfront cost down. If a salesperson can’t tell you their CEC accreditation number, or the installer who’ll actually be on your roof, that’s a reason to keep looking.

It’s also worth checking that the specific installer doing the physical work (not just the company selling you the system) is CEC-accredited for the technology being installed — solar PV and battery accreditation are separate.

Ask about compliance with current battery standards

If you’re adding a battery, ask how the installer plans to meet AS/NZS 5139, the Australian standard covering battery installation — things like clearance from doors and windows, ventilation, and keeping batteries away from combustible surfaces. This standard has been tightened in recent years specifically because of fire-risk incidents with poorly sited batteries. A competent installer should be able to explain, without being asked twice, where they’re planning to put your battery and why it satisfies these requirements.

Get more than one quote, and read them line by line

This sounds obvious, but it’s the single biggest lever homeowners have. Quotes vary not just on price but on what’s actually included: panel and inverter brand and model, battery brand and capacity, whether STCs have already been deducted from the price shown, warranty terms (product warranty vs workmanship warranty are different things), and who handles the grid connection paperwork with your network distributor.

Be cautious of quotes that lean heavily on projected savings figures rather than the hardware and installation details. Every household’s usage, roof orientation, and electricity plan are different, so a specific dollar-savings promise made before anyone has looked at your bills should be treated as a sales estimate, not a guarantee.

Local matters more than it sounds

An installer based in Sydney, servicing Sydney suburbs day to day, tends to have a better handle on things that are easy to get wrong from a distance: your local network distributor’s export limits and connection requirements, council or strata considerations in higher-density areas, and realistic timeframes for getting a system inspected and switched on. If something goes wrong with your system in year three, you also want an installer that’s still a local phone call away, not a call centre.

Questions worth asking before you sign

A few direct questions tend to separate solid installers from the rest: Who is the CEC-accredited installer doing the physical work, and what’s their accreditation number? How will the battery installation meet AS/NZS 5139 on my property specifically? What warranty applies to the panels, the inverter, the battery, and the installation labour, and who do I contact if something fails? Has the STC value already been factored into this quote, or is it separate? What happens if my network distributor limits how much I can export to the grid?

An installer who answers these clearly, with specifics rather than general reassurance, is worth more than one offering the lowest headline price.
