How to Compare Solar Quotes in Sydney: A Practical Guide
A practical guide to comparing solar quotes in Sydney — what to line up side by side, red flags to watch for, and questions that cut through the sales pitch.
Getting three solar quotes is easy advice to give and surprisingly hard to act on, because most quotes don’t line up cleanly against each other. One installer quotes a system in kW, another talks in panel count, a third leads with a weekly repayment figure and buries the actual system size on page four. If you’re trying to compare solar quotes in Sydney right now, the real work isn’t collecting quotes — it’s getting them into a shape where you can actually compare them.
Start by matching the basics
Before you look at price at all, line up four things across every quote you’ve received: total system size in kW, the specific panel model and brand, the specific inverter model and brand, and whether a battery is included or optional. It’s common for two quotes with a similar headline price to differ by a kW or more in system size, or to swap a well-known inverter brand for a cheaper one you’ve never heard of. Neither of those is automatically wrong, but you want to know you’re comparing like with like before you compare dollars.
Read the inclusions list, not just the total
A solar quote’s bottom-line number can hide a lot of what’s missing. Ask every installer for a written, itemised breakdown that covers the panels, inverter, mounting/racking, switchboard upgrade (if needed), metering, and installation labour. Some Sydney properties — older homes, older switchboards, tricky roof access, multi-storey installs — need extra work that isn’t always obvious from a drive-by quote. If one quote looks noticeably cheaper than the others, it’s worth asking directly whether it includes everything the more expensive ones do, rather than assuming it’s simply the better deal.
Ask who’s actually doing the install
A quote should tell you whether the installer uses their own employed electricians or subcontracts the physical installation out. Both models exist across the industry and neither is inherently better, but you want to know who’s accountable if something goes wrong after the panels are up, and who to call for warranty service down the track. Ask for the accreditation details of the person who will actually be on your roof, not just the company’s name.
Compare warranty terms line by line
Panels, inverters, and batteries each carry their own manufacturer warranty, and the installer separately provides a workmanship warranty on the install itself. These numbers vary by product and by installer, so ask each company to put their warranty terms for each component in writing rather than relying on a verbal “it’s all covered.” If a quote doesn’t clearly separate product warranty from workmanship warranty, ask them to.
Be wary of pressure and vague savings claims
If a quote comes with a hard deadline (“this price is only good today”), a verbal promise about how much you’ll save on your power bill without any numbers behind it, or pressure to sign on the spot, slow down. Genuine solar pricing doesn’t usually need to expire overnight, and any savings figure should be able to be explained — tied to your actual usage, your roof’s orientation, and your current tariff — rather than just asserted. If an installer can’t walk you through how they arrived at a number, that’s worth asking about before you sign anything.
Check what happens after the sale
Ask each installer directly: who do I call if there’s a fault in six months, and what’s your average response time for warranty callouts? A company that’s upfront about their after-sales process is generally one that expects to still be around to honour it.
The real comparison is apples to apples
The fastest way to get stuck choosing between solar quotes is to compare three different headline numbers without knowing what’s actually in each one. Slow that down: match system size, panel and inverter brand, full inclusions, installer accountability, and warranty terms first — then compare price. Once quotes are genuinely comparable, the right choice is usually a lot clearer.
