How much does solar cost in Sydney? (2026)
Most Sydney homes pay roughly $5,000 to $9,000 for a 6.6 kW solar system after the federal rebate, but the final price depends on the equipment, your roof and what the quote includes. This guide explains what drives the price so you can compare quotes properly.
What a solar system costs after the rebate
Published 2026 price guides put installed systems in the ranges below, after the federal Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) discount. These are national indicative ranges, not a Superb Solar quote, and Sydney prices sit within or close to them.
| System size | Indicative installed price after STC |
|---|---|
| 5 kW | $3,600 to $6,000 |
| 6.6 kW | $5,000 to $9,000 |
| 10 kW | $8,000 to $13,000 |
Another way to compare is price per watt. Guides put a quality system at about $0.85 to $1.40 per watt installed after the STC discount, including GST.
How the STC rebate works
The STC rebate is a discount applied to your price at the point of sale, not a cheque after installation. Your installer claims the certificates and takes the value off your quote.
The rebate shrinks each year, so the same system costs a little more to install in a later year. NSW does not have a general state rebate for solar panels, so the federal STC discount is the main incentive.
What changes the price of a solar system
- System size. Bigger systems cost more in total but usually less per watt.
- Panel tier. Premium panels can cost more per panel and usually come with longer warranties and higher efficiency.
- Inverter type. String inverters cost less. Microinverters add cost but monitor each panel and cope better with shade.
- Your roof. Tile or steep roofs, multiple roof faces and a two-storey home can add labour.
- Electrical work. An old switchboard or a meter upgrade can add to the job.
What size should a Sydney home choose?
A 6.6 kW system is a common starting point. Larger homes, homes with air conditioning, or households planning an electric vehicle often look at 10 kW. Going up in size typically costs less per extra watt than the first panels did.
The right size depends on how much power you use during the day, your roof space and your budget. We size it from your own bills.
How long does solar take to pay for itself?
Published guides commonly estimate payback at around 4 to 6 years for a 6.6 kW system. Your result depends on your electricity rate, how much solar you use at home, and what your retailer pays for exported power. We will show you the assumptions behind any estimate we give you.
How to compare solar quotes
- Is the price before or after the STC discount, and does it include GST?
- Which panel and inverter brands and models are quoted, and what are their warranties?
- Is the installation done by a Clean Energy Council accredited installer?
- Are switchboard work, metering and network approvals included?
- Who handles warranty and service calls after installation?
Be cautious of a quote that is far below the others without a clear reason. Price gaps of a few thousand dollars for the same size system usually come down to equipment, scope or after-sales support.
FAQ
Can I get a solar rebate in NSW? Yes. The federal STC discount applies in NSW and is built into your quote.
Is solar still worth it in Sydney? For many households with strong daytime use it can be, but it depends on your usage and rates. Ask for a quote that shows how it was calculated.
Should I add a battery now or later? You can add one later, but planning for it at the start can save rework. We can explain both options.
